Cervin Annual Event Recap
We want to thank everyone who attended our Annual Meeting at the Rosewood, and especially those who participated in our discussions on the future of enterprise technology. We truly appreciate it. The event was a great success with a full house of founders, executives, other venture firms, service providers and LPs.
Gaurav Dhillon, Chariman and CEO of our portfolio company, SnapLogic wrote a interesting piece that originally appeared on LinkedIn about how SnapLogic's new “self-driving” integration is harnessing the power of AI to improve the speed and quality of integrations across data, applications, and business processes.

AI fuels digital transformation as “self-driving” integration cruises into the enterprise

One of the biggest challenges for most companies is the innovation backlog – a never-ending tension between technology and line-of-business leaders over deadlines and priorities.
The crux of the problem is our industry’s traditional reliance on manual labor to get things done. Whether it’s throwing armies of developers at a problem, or hiring floors of consultants to drive a project to fruition, we’ve been surprisingly dependent on people as much as technology.
Our portfolio company Soha Systems, an innovator in delivering enterprise secure access as a service, was recently acquired by Akamai. When we first met Soha's founder, Haseeb Budhani in 2013, it was clear he had a big vision and a detailed plan on how to grow a successful company.
At Cervin, our goal is to provide our portfolio companies with tools and resources to improve their business performance. We believe it is vital for entrepreneurs to hear from other founders like Haseeb, and are excited to announce the launch of the Cervin Ventures Podcast. We recently sat down with him for our inaugural episode.
Our portfolio company Soha Systems, an innovator in enterprise secure access delivered as a service, was acquired by Akamai this past fall. When we first met Soha’s founder, Haseeb Budhani in 2013, it was clear he had a big vision and a detailed plan on how to grow a successful company.
At Cervin, we try to provide our portfolio companies with as many tools and resources as we can. We believe it is vital for entrepreneurs to hear from other founders like Haseeb, which is why we’re excited to announce the launch of the Cervin Ventures Podcast. Cervin Ventures Fund III
Cervin Ventures is pleased to announce the closing of Fund III, establishing our firm as a premier seed fund focused on enterprise technologies. We are glad to have leading university endowments, a global fund-of-funds, and various institutional family offices as our Limited Partners. In addition, many leading Silicon Valley executives and general partners have made strong commitments to the fund.
We’re looking forward to an exciting year at Cervin Ventures, and wanted to highlight some key takeaways from 2016 that we think are indicators for what to expect in 2017.
2016 was a banner year for us. Three of our portfolio companies had stellar exits. Replay Technologies was acquired by Intel. Soha Systems was purchased by Akamai Technologies and Zephyr sold a majority stake to Frontier Capital. At the end of the year, Cervin has 18 active companies in its portfolio across its funds, and we could not be more excited about our prospects.

As we say goodbye to 2016, we want to thank you, our portfolio companies, our partners, and our investors. We also want to take a moment to look back at a few highlights.
2016 was a strong year for Cervin. We had three successful exits and invested in four new companies. In addition, many of our portfolio companies raised additional capital to continue their journey to build large sustainable businesses. We are fortunate that a number of new investors joined our existing base of LPs in our latest fund, details of which we will be announcing after the holidays.

At a recent Kauffman Fellows Program event, Dr. Steven Kaplan of the University of Chicago presented his findings on how venture capitalists make decisions across various areas including deal sourcing, valuation, deal structure, post-investment value-add and exits. Some of the seemingly obvious findings were that VCs see the management team as more important than business related characteristics such as product or technology.

We hope that you are having a super summer. Pitchbook has released its new 2Q 2016 US Venture Industry Report. The data clearly shows that more money is going into fewer deals. While the amount of money invested in the quarter ($22.3B), is the largest in the last three years, the number of deals is lower. About two-thirds of the money invested was in deals of $25M or more - with many non-traditional VC’s playing a big part.
